TWS can provide you with a full range of designs when installing UPVC double glazed replacement windows. Each with its own unique attributes and uses, ensuring a comfortable fit whatever age or style of the surroundings.
Casement Style Windows
The most popular window designs are casement windows, comprising of a traditionally opening framed window. Economical and widely used with a basic and uncomplicated design and a straightforward opening style.
Casement Windows – Hinging Options
Where the hinges are placed usually dictates the function and location of these windows. The most common hinged casement windows have side hinges. Top hinged casement windows are however more often used in specific circumstances :
- Where ease of access is compromised as over a bathroom sink making a side hinged casement window impractical.
- Over a kitchen worktop where reaching would be a problem.
- In a home where there are elderly or disabled occupants who might find a side opening window difficult to manipulate. Top hinged casement windows are often used as standard in residential homes for the elderly etc providing ease of opening.
Vertical Sash Windows
These windows do not swing out but are opened by sliding up or down vertically, the motion in the past being controlled by cords and weights. Sash windows are a traditional style of window and consequently are often used in period homes or listed buildings in conservation areas for instance. Bow or bay windows are frequently fitted with sash windows.
The modern UPVC sash windows benefit from a spring system for an easy glide movement solving the age old problem of windows that are wedged closed or difficult to move.
Weather Seal Brush Strip – Sash Windows
A spring window mechanism ensures that the modern sash window has less need for maintenance than the original type. The brush seal on a sash window provides better weatherproofing unlike the rubber seal on a casement window. Sash horns are available with sash windows for an appropriately classic look and feel.
Sash windows are quite complicated and complex to produce requiring a larger amount of UPVC to be manufactured. As a result of this a UPVC sash window will cost approximately 50% more than a UPVC casement window.
Tilt & Turn Style Windows
A tilt and turn window is bottom hinged as standard and has restricted opening of typically 15 degrees. This allows for adequate ventilation, making them ideal for offices, businesses, hotels and flats.
The other great advantage of tilt and turn windows is that in case of emergency the hinge action adjusts enabling the window to be fully opened inwards. This is also useful when cleaning the window, where certain parts of the window would otherwise be difficult to reach.
The safety and cleaning options make this style of window increasingly popular and they are incorporated in many newly built flats. Tilt and turn windows are often a first choice when installing or replacing bay or bow windows. UPVC tilt and turn windows usually cost around 30% more than casement windows and 20% less than UPVC sash windows.
