Southend Conservation Area Window Grants Scheme

Traditional windows are essential to the character of historic buildings and conservation areas. Many older windows need repairing; others have been replaced by inappropriate designs. Window Grants are, therefore, available to help repair and reinstate traditional windows in Southend’s Conservation Areas.

Window Grants provide 40% of the cost of repairing and reinstating traditional windows in Conservation Areas such as those designated in Southend. Grants are up to £500 per property and are restricted to traditional windows facing the street which contribute to the area’s character. Window Grants are discretionary and will depend on funds being available when an application is made.

Southend Conservation Areas - Traditional Windows

Southend has many Victorian and Edwardian buildings, the style of windows was usually intended to be integral to the overall design. The window proportions, glazing bars, method of opening, materials, position in the facade all help to produce an attractive and well balanced appearance to the frontage. For terraces and semi-detached buildings with a uniform design the traditional window helps to unite the frontages. With changing designs over the years, original windows also help to establish a building’s period character. This is especially important in the later 19th and early 20th centuries when the style of windows was rapidly changing from sliding sash to hinged casements and fanlights.

Window Repair - The Best Option

Traditional timber windows can outlast modern windows if regularly maintained. Without maintenance these windows may become stuck in their frames or suffer from rot. Even then, a skilled craftsman may be able to repair a window for less than replacement cost. A window grant would also lessen the cost, so you should check the alternatives before replacing traditional windows.

Reinstate Traditional Windows

Where traditional windows have been lost, it is possible to reinstate replicas, using materials and designs to match the original, at very competitive prices. Many property owners in Southend’s Conservation Areas have already done this, often with the help of a grant, and have greatly improved the appearance of their home and  the Conservation Area.
