Originally introduced into the UK in the 6th century and popular by 17th century, orangeries were used to house orange trees imported from Southern Italy. These early orangeries were specially designed to nurture these Mediterranean plants with light and heat.
The function of the orangeries dictated a south facing position which sometimes meant being separate from the house. In recent times, these rigid functional requirements such as specific positioning and constant high temperatures are not required and the orangery has become an extra multi-purpose room with a pleasing aesthetic value.
